The journal publishes original papers, review articles, clinical studies, case reports, visual articles and letters to the editor on various areas and subspecialties – up-to-date reviews and researches.

When submitting an article authors must classify the submission and specify the type of article submitted according to the classification below.

Please note, however, that if an article is selected for publication, the publisher may require updating materials that adhere to much stricter guidelines for print and online publications.

For research articles there is no limit on the number of authors, but for other types of articles there is a maximum number required. Authors are requested to check carefully the details of the article submitted for publication.

Each type of article is limited to a maximum number of words including information from introduction to conclusion. Abstracts, figures and tables captions are excluded.

Articles exceeding the required word limit will be returned to the author without being read.

 

The types of sections described below fall into two broad categories:
A – articles using the standard format of medical articles (1-7)
B – non-standardized articles that typically express authors’ own opinions/comments (8-12)

1. Original Articles

Reports scientific results of fundamental, original, research (diagnosis or treatment) that are likely to change clinical practice or thinking about a disease.

• Maximum words: 2700.
• Maximum of 5 figures and tables
• Up to 40 references
• Format: introduction (present status of the problem, premises and objective of the research), material and methods, outcomes, conclusions (numbered, briefly presented and referring strictly to personal conclusions).

2. Special Articles

State-of-the-art articles provides information about recent advances in diagnosis and therapy in a field of medicine (controversial or or not) that requires the prompt attention of medical specialists.

Elements:

• Abstract and keywords
• Maximum words: 2700.
• Maximum of 5 figures and tables
• Up to 40 references
• Format: introduction (present status of the problem, premises and objective of the research), material and methods, outcomes, conclusions (numbered, briefly presented and referring strictly to personal conclusions).

3. Clinical Practice Review

Provides a general information about topics relevant to primary care practitioners and medical specialists, focusing on theoretical and/or practice (review of literature).

Elements:

• Abstract and keywords
• Maximum words: 2500.
• Maximum of 3 authors
• Maximum of 5 figures and tables
• Up to 50 references, recent (75% titles dating from the past 5 years), prioritizing articles published in extenso, quoting few abstracts, textbook chapters or entire books, introduced in the text.

Must contain:

• Clinical problem stated
• Strategies and existing evidence
• Areas of uncertainty
• Recommendations and guidelines from professional societies
• Authors' conclusions and recommendations

4. Other Review articles

Provides evidence-based analysis covering a wide variety of potential clinical topics.

Elements:

• Abstract and keywords
• Maximum words: 3,000.
• Maximum of 3 authors
• Maximum of 5 figures and tables
• Up to 75 references, recent (75% titles dating from the past 5 years), prioritizing articles published in extenso, quoting few abstracts, textbook chapters or entire books, introduced in the text.

5. Brief Reports

Content: Original studies involving a few patients or a single family, briefly described, which represent promising outcomes and may lead in the near future to publication of results in extenso.

• Abstract and keywords (100 words maximum)
• Maximum words: 2000.
• Maximum 3 original pictures (clinical, imagistic, morphological) and tables.
• Up to 25 references within the text.

6. Case Reports

Content: extraordinary or unusual clinical observations, ending with a confirmation (morphological, therapeutic etc.), describes how doctors/clinical teams’ reason and respond in each individual case

• Maximum of 5 authors
• Maximum 3 original pictures (clinical, imagistic, morphological) and tables.

7. Visual Articles

Clinical Picture (classic images — static) — illustrate extreme examples of a medical condition, captures the variety of cases that physicians experience in clinical practice.

• High resolution and high-quality image
• Maximum words: 500 (explain what the image represents, why is of interest to the reader, and the outcome of the patient)
• Maximum of 2 authors

8. Editorial

Scientific syntheses that may be written by a member of the Editorial Board or by a medical personality who is not a member of the Board of the journal.

Elements:

• Maximum words: 750
• Maximum of 2 authors
• They should have the following structure: context, content, comments, conclusion.

9. Letter to the Editor

Expresses a position or perspective on recently published articles, on a report or event from last issues, or it is a commentary on a particular scientific conference or book.

Elements:

• Maximum words: 700
• Maximum of 3 authors
• Up to 10 references
• The sender (any physician who wants to share his/her opinion on a certain article published in this journal) must mention his/her full name and current affiliation
• Only letters received no more than six months after the publication date of the discussed article are considered.

Note: letters to editors are not scientific articles and consequently they do not receive a DOI and are not indexed in any citation database.

10. Perspectives

Briefly addresses current topics in health and medicine from different perspectives

• Only single figure or table

11. Comments on clinical trials

This section hosts comments on the relevance of recently published clinical trials. Analyze a single paper explaining the conclusions and commenting on possible clinical applications.

• Maximum of 3 authors
• Authors comment on their own work.
